Joy Powers Endorsed by the United Auto Workers of America
Updated: Sep 12
Dublin, VA — 9th Congressional District Democratic Nominee Joy Powers today received the official endorsement of the United Autoworkers of America (UAW) union in her bid to unseat Congressman Morgan Griffith.

“I’m supporting Joy Powers because I believe she’ll fight for people who work for a living,” said Chris Via, a local UAW member. “We need a representative who understands what good union jobs mean to families in the New River Valley and who won’t stay silent when those jobs are threatened. Joy listens to working people, and I trust her to stand up for us in Congress.”
The UAW endorsement comes as manufacturing workers across the New River Valley face growing uncertainty over the impact of President Donald Trump’s tariffs on American manufacturers and their supply chains.
“Morgan Griffith has supported Donald Trump’s reckless tariff policies even as they threaten good-paying manufacturing jobs right here in the New River Valley,” Powers said. “Workers at Volvo in Pulaski County and across Southwest Virginia should not have their livelihoods put at risk because Griffith refuses to stand up to his own party when our jobs are on the line.”
Trump’s newest wave of tariffs endangers approximately 6,000 jobs in Virginia's 9th District, as well as more than $600 million in goods exported to Canada, according to latest reporting.
“Morgan Griffith has paid lip service to the workers of Southwest Virginia and the New River Valley for 16 years while we fall further and further behind. Every resident of the 9th district deserves a fair shot and a good job, and that’s what I’ll fight for every single day in Congress,” Powers added.
Powers called on Griffith to stand up to Trump, defend workers in the 9th District, and fight to protect the manufacturing jobs that families across Southwest Virginia and the New River Valley depend on.
Earlier this week, Powers challenged Griffith to three debates across the 9th District before voters cast their ballots this November. Griffith has yet to respond.
