Joy Powers to Hold Town Hall in Martinsville

Martinsville, VA — Joy Powers, Democratic nominee for Congress in Virginia’s Ninth District, will hold an in-person town hall in Martinsville on Tuesday, September 22, giving residents the opportunity to speak directly with Powers and ask questions about the issues facing their families and communities.

The town hall will be held from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Virginia Museum of Natural History, located at 21 Starling Ave, Martinsville, VA 24112.

“Representation means more than asking for someone’s vote every two years,” Powers said. “It means showing up in their community, listening to what they have to say, and being willing to answer their questions directly. I’m looking forward to hearing from the people of Martinsville and Henry County about what they need from their next representative.”

The Martinsville event follows Powers’ September 10 town hall in Russell County as she continues holding public conversations with voters across the Ninth District.

“A town hall should be pretty simple: you show up, you listen, and you answer the questions people put in front of you,” Powers said. “People are not always going to agree with me, and I don’t expect them to. But if I’m asking them to trust me with the responsibility of representing them in Congress, they deserve the opportunity to look me in the eye and ask where I stand.”

Congressman Morgan Griffith has not held a “brick-and-mortar” town hall in more than a decade.

Powers challenged Griffith on August 24 to debates in far Southwest Virginia, the New River Valley, and the eastern end of the district, with locations, moderators, and formats to be mutually agreed upon by both campaigns. Griffith declined the proposal in a September 4 letter, writing that Ninth District voters “already know where I stand.”
