Joy Powers to Hold Town Hall in Russell County

Cleveland, VA — Joy Powers, Democratic nominee for Congress in Virginia’s Ninth District, will hold an in-person town hall in Russell County on Thursday, September 10, giving residents the opportunity to speak directly with Powers and ask questions about the issues facing their families and communities.

The town hall will be held from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Cleveland Community Center, located at 6 Minor Street in Cleveland.

“People deserve a representative who will show up, listen, and answer their questions directly,” Powers said. “Russell County families know better than anyone what their communities need, and I want to hear from them — whether we agree on every issue or not. That is what representation is supposed to look like.”

Congressman Morgan Griffith has not held an open, in-person town hall for Ninth District constituents during

his nearly 15 years in Congress. Instead, Griffith regularly conducts telephone town halls and sends congressional staff to traveling office hours throughout the district.

Powers said her Russell County town hall reflects the kind of accessible representation she intends to bring to Congress.

“For too long, people across Southwest Virginia have had to settle for a congressman they rarely get the opportunity to question face-to-face,” Powers said. “If I am asking the people of this district to send me to Congress, they have every right to look me in the eye, ask me where I stand, and expect an answer.”

The event comes as Powers continues campaigning across Virginia’s Ninth Congressional District and speaking

with voters about the cost of living, protecting rural hospitals, and opposing massive data center developments that threaten rural communities, farmland, and local resources.

Last week, Powers challenged Griffith to three debates across the 9th District before voters cast their ballots this November. Griffith has yet to respond.
