Feeding the Camera, Not the Hungry: McGuire's SNAP Cuts Exposed

I was shocked when I turned on the nightly news and saw a food bank being used as a backdrop for what now looks like a fraudulent photo op by newly-elected Congressman John McGuire.

According to The News & Advance, McGuire visited Park View Community Mission in Lynchburg on April 22, 2025, to discuss food insecurity. During the visit, he assured attendees that he knew nothing about any proposed cuts to the SNAP program—the very program that helps low-income families put food on the table.

But the truth was different. As The Watchman (link here) reported, McGuire had already voted for a House budget resolution that endorses cuts to SNAP. Millions of households could lose vital food aid if these cuts are enacted (source: CBPP).

This is not acceptable representation. Either Congressman McGuire didn’t understand what he voted for—a failure of basic responsibility—or he did, and chose to mislead both the community and the very people working every day to fight hunger.

At that meeting, McGuire said, "I'm only as good as the information you give me."With respect, Congressman, gathering accurate information before casting critical votes is part of the job.

The people of Virginia’s 5th District deserve honesty, not photo ops. Congressman McGuire owes his constituents an explanation—and an apology.
